I am currently repairing my score.  When I pulled it in August of 2008, it was 590.  I am paying off my cards, do not seek new credit, and the score has improved to 690 (Experian).

Is it true that one should not close accounts but simply not use them anymore until they are no longer reported to the credit bureaus by the credit card issuers?

If you are not closed your account means definetly they will not do anything with your credit score,If you apply for new credit card, you will get previous credit score also.

I used to have wonderful credit score until I got married and had kids.  I had to stay home and then later work from home so now I am trying to improve my credit score.  I don't even want to know what it was a year ago.  ANY suggestions.

you should have clear credit files like previous loans are supposed to be cleared within the grace period,if so you will get good score points.

Well, there are many ways to increase your credit score but the old fashion way is to pay off debt in the appropriate time frame.  Making sure you are not late and if there are any issues you should call the credit card company and not allow fees to pile up, get delinquent, or ignore them all together.
